(PatriotWise.com) — Police in Hialeah, Florida arrested a 13-year-old boy last Thursday after he stabbed his mother as she lay sleeping just a few feet away from her 2-week-old baby, the Miami Herald reported.
According to WTVJ, the 8th grader called Hialeah Police at about 11:30 p.m. last Thursday and told them he just killed his mother in their apartment. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the mother’s body in front of the 2-week-old’s crib, dead from multiple stab wounds.
The suspect, whose name was withheld because of his age, was taken into custody and later charged as a juvenile with second-degree murder.
However, investigators from the Hialeah Police Department and state prosecutors will determine if the boy should be tried as an adult with first-degree murder, which would require premeditation, according to the Miami Herald.
In his police interview, the boy told detectives that his mother was asleep when he stabbed her. After he killed her, the boy allegedly took pictures of his mother’s body and sent them to a friend via social media, according to the arrest report obtained by WTVJ. The boy also called his friend and admitted that he killed his mother.
The 14-day-old infant, the boy’s half-sister, was unharmed.
Hialeah Police Lt. Eddie Rodriguez told WTVJ that the boy’s stepfather, his mother’s second husband, is a truck driver who was in Georgia at the time of the stabbing.
The victim was identified as Irina Garcia, according to WSVN.
According to Lt. Rodriguez, detectives are still trying to determine why the boy murdered his mother. He told WTVJ that the teen, who is a straight-A student at iMater Academy in Hialeah, was described as a “good kid.” He added that police are “scratching our heads” to determine what could have “brought him to do such a thing.”
Law & Crime reported on Sunday that the boy has been named as Derek Rosa. Lt. Rodriguez told the outlet that Rosa has no history of mental health issues.
