Biden Sabotaged A CIA Nominee For Classified Document Handling Years Ago

( – According to a report in The Intercept, President Joe Biden had a hand in blocking former President Jimmy Carter’s CIA director nomination on the grounds of classified document mishandling.

In 1976, Carter nominated Ted Sorenson to lead the CIA. At the time, Biden was a Senator and part of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Sorensen, a friend of former President John F. Kennedy, had admitted to accessing secret documents while researching and writing his biography of Kennedy. He had also come to the defense of Daniel Ellsberg, who had infamously leaked the Pentagon Papers.

According to Sorensen, Biden was in vocal support of his CIA head nomination. In fact, the former Senator allegedly said Sorensen was “the best appointment Carter has made.” The sentiment led Sorensen to believe Biden supported him.

However, Senate Republicans turned on Sorensen. Shortly thereafter, Biden and his staff launched efforts to block Sorensen’s nomination, too.

His staff carefully scrutinized Sorensen’s books and paperwork, unearthing any information that would help support the case for charging Sorensen with violating the Espionage Act. They recalled Sorensen’s previous admissions during the Ellsberg case, in which he said that he and other Washington officials had regularly reviewed classified documents and materials home – and even leaked information to the press with impunity.

During Soren’s confirmation hearing, Biden said he was unsure “whether Mr. Sorensen purposefully took advantage of the ambiguities in the law or carelessly ignored the law.”

Later, Sorensen said that Biden deserves a “prize for political hypocrisy in a town noted for political hypocrisy.”

This is ironic in light of recent events regarding Biden’s own handling and storage of top-secret records, both at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement and at his Delaware home. Even as Attorney General Merrick Garland has selected a special counsel to look into the situation, Biden, the White House, and his supporters have worked to minimize the revelations.
