(PatriotWise.com)- Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease expert, recently said in an interview that he’d support airlines mandating vaccines for passengers to fly.
Last Friday, he taped an episode of the “Skimm This” podcast, produced by theSkimm, that is set to be released this week. On the show, he said of the airline vaccine mandates:
“I would support that, if you want to get on a plane and travel with other people that you should be vaccinated.”
Last Thursday, Democratic Representative Don Beyer from Virginia set forth a new proposal that would force all passengers on trains and airlines in the United States to show proof that they have been vaccinated against COVID-19. In lieu of that vaccination proof, passengers could show a negative COVID-19 test.
The bill is being called the Safe Travel Act. Beyer said it’s a bill that advocates for travelers on commercial airlines and Amtrak trains. If the passengers aren’t vaccinated against COVID-19, they can provide the companies with a negative COVID-19 test that they took within 72 hours of getting on the plane or train.
In addition to the requirement on the passengers themselves, the bill would also require subcontractors, contractors and employees of commercial airlines as well as Amtrak to show that they have completed the vaccination process. If they don’t want to get vaccinated, they can instead get tested once a week for COVID-19. They could only work if the test came back negative every week.
Currently, there is a mask mandate from the federal government that requires all passengers on trains, buses and airlines to wear a face covering. That will remain in effect until at least January 18 of next year.
However, there isn’t a vaccination mandate currently in place for travelers, and no requirement for a negative test, either.
In supporting his opinions on the vaccine mandate, Fauci explained that there are already similar mandates in place for other vaccines. Fauci, who serves as the chief medical adviser for President Joe Biden, said on the podcast:
“When you hear us say should you mandate vaccination for children to be able to attend school, some people say, ‘Oh, my goodness. That would be terrible to do that.’ But we already do that and have been doing that for decades and decades.
“I don’t know what school you went to, but the school that I went to, you had to be vaccinated or measles, mumps, rubella, polio, or otherwise you couldn’t go to school.”
He described the mandates of vaccines for children as “not something new,” adding the vaccines are “the solution that we have at our hands.”
In the past, Fauci has also said it “is a good idea” to mandate children have the vaccine to attend school — once it’s available to all school-aged children.
Many members of the federal government and medical community are ramping up the dialogue on vaccine mandates as the country is dealing with the Delta variant.
