High-Speed Chase Results in the Discovery of a Large Cache of Ammunition

(PatriotWise.com) — A heavily armed Florida man is facing multiple criminal charges in Rhode Island after leading police on a high-speed chase last Friday that resulted in multiple crashes, WPRI reported.

Kissimmee resident Joshua Pavao, 43, was arrested by East Providence police after causing a 4-vehicle crash at Pawtucket and Taunton Avenues.

According to police, the crash scene was littered with multiple loaded magazines and hundreds of rounds of rifle ammunition, and officers discovered three full duffle bags containing thousands of additional ammunition rounds in Pavao’s vehicle.

The incident began at about 2:20 p.m. last Friday when the rear window of a vehicle parked outside of a house on Estrell Drive was shot out. Police reported a black Nissan with Florida plates being spotted turning off of Pawtucket onto Crown Avenue.

Police eventually caught up with the Nissan, pursuing the vehicle through the Kent Heights neighborhood after the driver failed to pull over.

The ensuing chase returned to Pawtucket, where the driver hit another vehicle and continued at a high speed, eventually running a red light at Taunton and crashing into three other vehicles.

According to police, Pavao attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly captured.

While thousands of rounds of ammunition were found in Pavao’s Nissan and at the site of the crash, no firearms were found at the scene. Police began searching along the route of the chase and eventually received a tip about a backpack near Boyd Avenue. The backpack contained three loaded pistols and a pellet rifle. Nearby, police found a bulletproof vest.

A surveillance video of Pavao tossing the backpack and vest out of the vehicle was later obtained.

According to police, the initial shooting on Estrell Drive appeared to be a targeted attack. Pavao fired no additional shots after that.

The other drivers in the four-car crash were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Pavao faces multiple charges, including 106 counts of possession of large-capacity magazines, two counts of possession of a pistol without a permit, eluding police in a high-speed pursuit, and discharge of a firearm from a vehicle.
