Illegal Immigrant Allegedly Killed Mother and Son in DWI Incident

(PatriotWise.com) — The suspect in last month’s deadly drunk driving crash near Boulder, Colorado, was a four-time deported illegal alien from El Salvador, Fox News reported.

Jose Menjivar-Alas, 37, was arrested in connection with a two-vehicle crash near Broomfield High School on December 12.

According to the arrest affidavit, Menjivar-Alas was driving nearly twice the speed limit and was weaving through traffic before the crash that killed 46-year-old Melissa Powell and her 16-year-old son Riordan, a student from the school.

The District Attorney’s Office announced on December 21 that Menjivar was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of DUI.

Menjivar-Alas was driving south on Main Street in a Toyota Tundra when he crashed into Powell’s Mazda as she was turning left onto Main Street from Miramonte Boulevard at around 1:45 p.m. on December 12.

Powell was pronounced dead at the scene, and her son, Riordan, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses said Menjivar-Alas had been driving at speeds of at least 80 mph in the 40 mph zone while weaving around several vehicles, often crossing the double-yellow centerline.

Police found at least two empty beer cans in the front of the Tundra and a third beer can on the roadway. An open case of beer, missing three cans, was placed on the rear passenger seat.

According to the arrest affidavit, responding officers detected an “overwhelming” smell of alcohol inside the vehicle.

While Menjivar-Alas was in the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash, police served a warrant for a blood-alcohol test, which revealed that his blood-alcohol content was .249, three times over the legal limit.

The Salvadoran national had two previous drunk driving guilty pleas in Boulder County, Colorado, in 2007 and 2016, according to court records.

In a statement to Fox News, Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that Menjivar-Alas had been previously deported and described him as having “no regard for immigration law.”
