(PatriotWise.com)- Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner were always prominent in the former president’s administration.
But according to Stephanie Grisham, the former White House press secretary, the power couple regarded themselves as a “shadow president and first lady.”
Grisham made those comments to CNN while she was pushing her new book “I’ll Take Your Questions Now.” She said Kushner “got really heady with power,” inserting himself in various initiatives for which he wasn’t qualified.
The former press secretary explained:
“He would dive into these areas where I know he had absolutely no expertise. And, you know, claim to save the day and then he would leave. And, you know, there was a running joke in the White House that when things were getting really tough, they suddenly disappeared on vacations.
“He was tough to deal with, and I think he got really heady with power. I do not think he left there the best version of himself.”
Grisham’s appearance on CNN and controversial comments about Ivanka Trump and Kushner came on the same morning that her book was being released. CNN gave her the platform to criticize the couple and to push her new book in the process.
Under Trump, Grisham served as press secretary for only nine months. In fact, she never even held a press briefing.
When she left that position, she moved over to serve First Lady Melania Trump. At one point, Grisham also was the communications director for the White House.
In her book, Grisham calls Kushner “Rasputin in a slim-fitting suit.” She said he “did what he wanted and nobody challenged him.”
In one instance, Kushner and another of Trump’s senior advisers defied the rules of the chief of staff on hiring personnel.
Kushner is “an intelligent man,” Grisham was quick to explain, but his wife is “the smarter one” and “the brains” in the couple. She also said Ivanka is “very controlling of her image” and “is unlike her father,” in that she can often remain controlled and calm.
Grisham explained that she believed Ivanka and Kushner believed they were America’s royal family. They even believed they should be a part of every activity the president and first lady took part in with the queen during one state dinner, which the former press secretary said she thought was “really inappropriate.”
In fact, Grisham details in her book that one of the only times where the couple didn’t get their way was when they were denied from meeting with England’s Queen Elizabeth II because there was no more space on a helicopter.
Most of the time, the couple got what they wanted and were a part of things that other daughters and son-in-laws of a president never were.
“They were always right there, and it was really inappropriate. And that would make Mrs. Trump upset because she is a big rule follower in terms of protocol and whatnot, and it was just really inappropriate.
“So, we in the East Wing would do what we could to stop it or mitigate it, but at the end of the day, it’s his daughter and son-in-law, and nobody could work around them.”
