(PatriotWise.com)- Delaware, the home state of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, has officially elected the first-ever “transgender” candidate to the state Senate. Sarah McBride is a self-described transgender person and won the state senate race in Delaware’s District 1.
“The stakes could not be higher for the lives of trans people and the future of our democracy.” Tonight’s results are far more profound than electoral politics — they’re about the wellbeing of over 1.4 million trans Americans. Our latest liveblog:https://t.co/a8E2ZJUmNP

“We’re so proud of you for this historic win.”
The use of the word “openly” means that the Human Rights Campaign believes there may have been previous state senators who were transgender without telling anybody.
“It is my fervent hope that tonight a young person in Delaware […] or anywhere in this country can go to sleep tonight […] with a powerful but simple message: that our democracy is big enough for them too.” – @SarahEMcBride #ElectionNight #UnityWins (📹: @cmclymer) pic.twitter.com/1zMbGSYHeq

McBride has become the highest-ranking transgender person in the country. According to the New York Times, she is part of a “surge of transgender candidates running for office this election cycle.”
The trans candidate also spoke at the Democratic National Convention back in 2016 and made history back then by becoming the first transgender person to speak at a major-party convention in the United States.
Thank you so much, @ChelseaClinton!!
