(PatriotWise.com) – Last Tuesday, a 44-year-old east London woman was charged in the killing of a 2-year-old boy and his 5-year-old brother whose bodies were found in her Dagenham home less than two weeks before Christmas.
Kara Alexander, 44, of Dagenham, appeared before Barkingside magistrates where she was charged with murder in the deaths of 2-year-old Elijah Thomas and his 5-year-old brother Marley whose bodies were discovered at her home on Friday, December 16.
During Thursday’s court proceedings at the Old Bailey, prosecutors said while the final post-mortem is pending, it is likely the boys were either smothered or drowned.
Elijah and Marley’s bodies were found by their father Selvin Thomas after he forced his way into Alexander’s home.
According to court documents, Alexander allegedly told Thomas that the boys were sleeping upstairs. After forcing his way inside, Thomas found the boys in their bedroom “obviously deceased and cold to the touch.” He called the police who arrested Alexander in a nearby garden a short time later.
Prosecutor Philip Evans KC told the court that they were still awaiting the post-mortem results. However, initial findings suggested that the boys’ breathing “had been interfered with,” indicating they were possibly smothered or drowned.
Alexander appeared in court at the Old Bailey via video link from the Bronzefield prison where she is being held. She was charged with two counts of murder.
According to the prosecution, Elijah and Marley were last seen on CCTV footage accompanied by the defendant in the later afternoon of December 15. The following day, police were called to Alexander’s home around 2:00 pm by the children’s father.
Judge Mark Lucraft remanded Alexander into custody ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing scheduled for March 9. Alexander’s trial date was scheduled for July 10.
A man who had been arrested in connection with the killings was released last weekend with no further action.
