Nancy Pelosi’s Communion “Stunt” Backfires

( Bill Donohue, the leader of the Catholic League, criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Wednesday for turning the Eucharist into a political issue by taking communion at the Vatican.

Dr. Donohue remarked that Pelosi, who denies the teachings of the Catholic Church on abortion, marriage, and sexuality, took Holy Communion on June 29 during a papal Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. The pope was present, but he did not distribute Communion.

According to Donohue, Pelosi’s move was intended to undermine San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, who had instructed her not to receive Communion due to her passion for abortion rights.

Given that priests are pastors rather than police officers and presume that anybody approaching the altar to take the sacrament is in a fit state to do so, Donohue noted that such discipline rests on the good intention of the individual in the issue.

Donohue said there is just one person to blame — Pelosi, even though some may blame the Vatican for what transpired and others may blame Cordileone.

Archbishop Cordileone used canon law and followed Catholic doctrine when he asked Pelosi not to take Communion, Donohue continued.

According to Donohue, the priest who distributed Communion to Pelosi in the Vatican on Wednesday was one of several priests present and had no idea who Pelosi was.

Donohue said the priest merely carried out his duty. He distributed Communion to everyone waiting in line to receive it. However, this does not rule out the potential of someone abusing the sacrament on purpose.

Nancy Pelosi wants to be devout, practicing Catholic while simultaneously rejecting and actively opposing the Church’s most cherished moral doctrines about the sanctity of life and marriage.

Donohue concluded that Pelosi’s line-waiting for Communion is similar to a murderer standing in line to pay his respects to his victim at a Catholic wake, which is poignant in more ways than one.
