(PatriotWise.com) — Controversial New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has said that conservatives are waging war on the LGBT+ community because it challenges their power. She said the apparent “attacks” on transgendered people are being used to distract from the abuses perpetuated by heterosexual men. “It’s actually the LGBT+ community doing much of the work of challenging those same patriarchal and oppressive norms that uphold the kinds of silence that benefits abusers,” she said. The Democrat went on to explain how she had been subjected to predatory behavior by males and suggested that it was dangerous for women and children to be in the presence of straight men.
Ocasio-Cortez has also lashed out at fellow Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia. In response to the deadly shooting by Audrey Hale, who murdered 6 people at a Christian school in Tennessee, Taylor Greene questioned whether Hale had been taking hormones which may have affected her mentality. Hale identified as transgender and had previously been a pupil at the school she attacked. The New York Rep. turned it around on Taylor Greene and asked why she had posed for photos with the very same guns that had been used to carry out the killings. She said Taylor Greene’s words were “disgusting.”
The gender identity of Hale has come under increasing scrutiny in the days following the Tennessee shootings. While police say there is no evidence that it was a factor in the killings, a group called Trans Resistance Network has said that “hate” of transpeople in the state led to the tragedy. “Hate has consequences,” the group said as it advertised a “Day of Vengeance” to take place in Washington, DC, in April. Some activists and commentators have said that Hale’s gender identity is being used as a scapegoat by conservatives to attack transgendered people and to distract from the gun control debate. Kris Brown, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said, “What is causing gun violence in America is our easy access to firearms.”
