Oxford School Shooter’s Parents To Stand Trial for Manslaughter

(PatriotWise.com) — The mother of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley was in court this week facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, WXYZ-TV in Detroit reported.

Jennifer Crumbley, along with her husband James Crumbley, are each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection to the November 2021 shooting at Oxford High School, in which Ethan Crumbley killed four students and injured seven others.

In mid-November, a judge ruled that the parents could be tried separately.

The Crumbleys had previously prepared for a united defense. However, their attorneys requested separate trials after prosecutors provided new evidence in the case that raised a conflict.

Oakland County Judge Cheryl Matthews granted the request to sever the trials but did not say at the time which parent would be tried first.

WXYZ confirmed on Monday that Jennifer Crumbley would be the first to face trial, while James Crumbley is scheduled to be in court on March 5.

Jury selection in Jennifer Crumbley’s trial began on Tuesday and was expected to take several days. However, given the high-profile nature of the case, jury selection could take longer.

Ethan Crumbley, 17, pleaded guilty last year to 24 charges and was sentenced on December 8 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Prosecutors accuse Crumbley’s parents of contributing to the mass murder by making the weapon accessible to their then-15-year-old son and ignoring his psychological problems.

Key evidence expected in the Crumbleys’ trials includes the details of how they secured the weapon their son used to commit the shootings and Ethan’s repeated cries for help.

To prove involuntary manslaughter, the prosecutor must prove gross negligence and that the gun, combined with Ethan’s requests for help, made the shooting inevitable.

Both Jennifer and James Crumbley have pleaded not guilty.

The four students killed in Ethan Crumbley’s shooting rampage on November 30, 2021, were 17-year-olds Justin Shilling and Madisyn Baldwin, 16-year-old Tate Myre, and 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana.
