Pope Benedict Apologizes After Child Abuse Discovery Comes Out

(PatriotWise.com)- On Monday, former Pope Benedict XVI was forced to admit to giving inaccurate information during an inquiry in Germany into his presence at a meeting in 1980 where he discussed a pedophile priest. The former pope claimed that his inaccurate claims constituted an “oversight” and that he is “very sorry for this mistake and asks to be excused.”

The words were communicated by his personal secretary Georg Ganswein, submitted as a statement to the KNA news agency.

The statement insisted that the meeting attended by the former pope did not result in a decision about reassigning the accused priest to his normal duties.

The German inquiry, which resulted in a report by law firm Westpfahl Spilker Wastl, was commissioned by archdiocese of Munich with the aim of determining the extent of child sexual abuse cases in the Church between 1945 and 2019. The inquiry also looked at how those cases were dealt with by the Church.

It uncovered extremely disturbing cases of children being abused by priests, only for those priests to be reallocated to different areas and churches. One of the most famous cases involved Peter Hullermann, a pedophile who was transferred to Munich after it was revealed that he had sexually assaulted an 11-year-old boy.

In the new statement, it was revealed that the former pope did attend the Ordinariate meeting where the decision was made to admit Hullermann to the diocese.

Now 94 years old, the former pope is in ill health – but he is reportedly still reading the inquiry report and statements. His secretary said that the report fills him with “shame and pain about the suffering inflicted on the victims.”
