Putin’s War Has Already Cost Russia More Casualties Than The Revolutionary War

(PatriotWise.com)- In a briefing last week, a Pentagon official suggested that Russia has probably suffered between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties in Ukraine since the invasion began.

According to Colin Kahl, the undersecretary for policy at the Department of Defense, that figure, which includes both those troops killed and wounded in action, could be slightly lower or slightly higher, “but I think that’s kind of in the ballpark.”

Kahl said that number is “remarkable,” especially in light of the fact that Russia has not accomplished any of President Vladimir Putin’s objectives in Ukraine.

Kahl also told reporters that Ukraine has suffered high casualty numbers as well in what he called the “most intense” European conventional conflict since World War Two.

However, Kahl added, Ukraine does have “a lot of advantages,” including “their will to fight.”

If Kahl’s estimate is correct, in just six months, Russian forces sustained more killed and wounded than the Americans did during the entire eight years of the Revolutionary War. The total number of American casualties between 1775 and 1783 was around 66,000.

In July, CIA Director Bill Burns suggested that Russia had suffered about 60,000 casualties, including 15,000 killed. Either an additional ten thousand have been killed since then, or the estimates have been revised.

The total number of Russian casualties has not been independently verified, however, and lots of numbers have been floating around.

Last week, the Ukrainian military estimated that 42,800 Russian troops have been killed in combat, a number that is nearly three times what other Western officials have estimated.

Moscow has released no data on the dead and injured since the end of March when the Kremlin reported only 1,351 Russian troops had been killed in action.
