(PatriotWise.com) — A man who led police on a chase through the Las Vegas suburbs after fatally shooting his mother shot and killed a father of seven before he died from gunshot wounds, the Associated Press reported.
According to police, the deadly spree began in the early hours of Wednesday, December 27, when the suspect fatally shot his mother in southeastern Las Vegas. When police responded to the shooting, the suspect opened fire.
As officers took cover, the suspect stole an unoccupied police vehicle and fled the scene with officers in pursuit. After about 8 miles, the suspect abandoned the police vehicle and stole a pickup truck at gunpoint, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
The chase continued, with officers pursuing the stolen pickup. The suspect later abandoned the truck and stole another person’s SUV. An officer opened fire at the suspect before he fled in the SUV. A short time later, the suspect abandoned the SUV, pointed his firearm at the driver of a van, and fired. Officers saw the suspect remove the injured driver from the van before speeding away.
The van eventually stopped, and the suspect remained inside. SWAT officers approached the vehicle and saw that the suspect had been injured. EMTs responded to the scene, and the suspect was pronounced dead.
According to the Associated Press, the driver of the van fatally shot by the suspect was identified as Jerry Lopez, 39, a married father of seven children between the ages of 3 and 11.
His wife, Karen Lopez, told the AP that Jerry had just left for work at about 4:00 a.m. and was only minutes from their home when he was killed.
Lopez had reportedly pulled to the side of the road to yield the right of way to police vehicles involved in the chase when the suspect confronted him.
According to Captain Joshua Martinez, the suspect died from gunshot wounds sustained during the pursuit.
