(PatriotWise.com)- A cross was the only thing left standing after a fire tore through the Balsora Baptist Church in Bridgeport, Texas last Friday, prompting the local volunteer department to describe it as “a sight to behold.”
The fire broke out and quickly consumed the church, leveling the structure and destroying almost everything inside until the only thing remaining was the cross.
According to the fire department, the cross, located at the church’s altar, was used by parishioners to display prayer requests for others to read.
As firefighters battled to contain the blaze, the roof over the sanctuary collapsed causing minor injuries to firefighters who were evaluated and treated at the scene. Extreme temperatures made containing the blaze harder, prompting officials to call in at least 11 other local and state agencies to help put out the fire.
As the flames were brought under control and the smoke cleared away, firefighters were stunned to find the cross still standing.
According to the Booneville-Balsora Volunteer Fire Department, while the loss of the church is devastating to the community, seeing the cross in the wreckage was “a sight to behold.” It stood as a symbol that the church is more than a building; it is a congregation, “and where two or more gather, there He shall be also.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
