(PatriotWise.com)- Former President Donald Trump is ahead in the polls for the GOP 2024 presidential primary, and he hasn’t even officially announced his intention to run.
The former president already has a commanding lead over GOP rivals for the presidential nomination in 2024, according to a survey from Harvard CAPS-Harris.
Trump received 47% support from registered Republicans and independent voters in a hypothetical primary race. That’s some 37 points more than popular Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, who received 10% of the vote. DeSantis is widely considered to be a Trump-esque candidate who would continue the former president’s Make America Great Again agenda, and it is unclear whether DeSantis would run if the former president ultimately decides to run.
In a hypothetical situation whereby the former president doesn’t run, former Vice President Mike Pence has a narrow lead over DeSantis, with 23% to the Florida governor’s 21%. That’s an incredible number, given Pence’s decision to verify the Electoral College results from last year’s presidential election – a move that lost him support among the Trump base.
Pollster Mark Penn said that Trump is still the “candidate to beat” in the next Republican primary. However, he added that with his support under 50%, he isn’t completely invincible.
“Governor Ron DeSantis continues to strengthen despite limited recognition as the emerging next choice,” he added.
Trump has not committed to running yet but has told his supporters recently that he believes they will be “very happy” about the decision he makes.
President Joe Biden has also indicated that he plans to run for a second term and assuming he makes it that far, we could well see Trump go head-to-head with Biden once again in 2024.
