(PatriotWise.com) — Last Thursday, the Trump campaign confirmed that attorney John Lauro has been added to the legal team representing Donald Trump in the special counsel’s investigation into the former president’s actions after the 2020 election, CBS News reported.
The announcement of Lauro’s addition came just days after Trump revealed that his attorneys received a notice from special counsel Jack Smith’s office that he is the target of a grand jury probe.
In its letter to Trump’s attorneys, the special counsel’s office cited three federal statutes, two related to conspiracy to commit an offense or defraud the US, and a third related to possible charges ranging from witness tampering to obstruction of an official proceeding.
According to CNN, Lauro, who will be working with Trump’s other attorney Todd Blanche, will solely focus on the special counsel’s investigation into Trump’s alleged attempts to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power, including his possible involvement in the January 6 riot at the Capitol.
Lauro is also part of the legal team that was attempting to discover if other Trump allies also received similar target letters from the special counsel.
A former federal prosecutor, Lauro now works as a white-collar attorney practicing out of New York. He is also licensed to practice law in Washington D.C. and Florida, CNN reported.
Trump has already been indicted in the special counsel’s parallel investigation into his handling of classified documents.
On Friday, it was reported that the judge in the classified documents case, US District Judge Aileen Cannon, had scheduled the start of the 2-week trial for May 20, 2024, at the height of the GOP primary season.
According to a report in Washington Post on Friday, more than half of the over $35 million raised by the Trump campaign during the second quarter of 2023 went to Trump’s Save America, the PAC that is paying the former president’s legal fees. The campaign itself pulled in only $17.7 million.
