(PatriotWise.com) — In a recent interview, former president Donald Trump denied that he failed to “drain the swamp” and said his one regret from his 4 years in the White House was some of his cabinet picks, the Washington Examiner reported.
In an interview that aired on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” host Maria Bartiromo called out Trump for not draining the swamp as he promises, prompting the former president to cite the firing of former FBI Director James Comey as proof that he did.
Trump claimed that if he hadn’t fired James Comey, he probably wouldn’t have been “able to serve out my term because that was a plot.”
Bartiromo noted Trump’s poor track record of hiring officials who later criticize him, like former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and former Attorney General William Barr, and asked him what he planned to do differently if he wins the White House in 2024.
Trump said his “mistake” as president “would be people.” He said he wouldn’t appoint William Barr, whom he described as “weak and pathetic.”
Trump also said he shouldn’t have appointed his other former Attorney General, Jeff Sessions.
Trump again said there were some people that he shouldn’t have appointed and said while most of his appointments “were good,” he did appoint some people, like Mark Esper, that he didn’t like. Trump added that Esper “was incompetent.”
This prompted Bartiromo to ask why Trump “put them in the job” in the first place if he didn’t like them.
The former president admitted that he appointed people that he didn’t know, but now he knows them “better than anybody has ever known.”
During the interview, Trump also refused to say whether he would participate in the first GOP primary debate. However, he claimed that he doesn’t need to do the debate because he is leading in early national primary polls.
