Trump’s Legal Dangers Rise As Democrats Try To Take Him Down

( The legal pressure on former President Donald Trump is mounting.

This week prosecutors in New York at both the local and state level announced they are conducting a joint criminal investigation into the former president’s company.

As of now, it’s unclear of the exact charges that are being explored by the district attorney in Manhattan and the attorney general of the state. At the same time, the public announcement certainly signals that the two offices are escalating their investigations.

Just three months ago, Cy Vance Jr., the Democratic district attorney of Manhattan, obtained the tax returns of Trump after a Supreme Court ruling on the matter.

At the same time, Letitia James, the Democratic attorney general of New York, has filed motions in court against the Trump Organization for an investigation she’s conducting into its assets.

On Tuesday, James said his office informed Trump’s company that the probe was expanding to a criminal investigation. Before, it had just been a civil matter.

A spokesman for James, Fabien Levy, commented in a statement:

“We are now actively investigating the Trump Organization in a criminal capacity, along with the Manhattan DA. We have no additional comment at this time.”

To this point, what the next steps are haven’t been revealed yet. For the most part, both the AG and DA’s offices haven’t released much information about their investigations. But, now that they are going public with this information, it certainly turns up the pressure on both of their offices, as well as the former president.

Daniel Horwitz, who once served as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan, told The Hill that if the GA found evidence that a crime had been committed, it would likely turn to the DA to get more resources. That’s because the DA is in a better position to conduct investigations that are criminal in nature, and then prosecute them.

As Horwitz said:

This appears to be an absolutely serious investigation. And based on what’s in the newspapers, it seems to be fairly advanced. It would seem that the district attorney and the attorney general have devoted significant resources to this investigation.

“Whether it ends in a prosecution of individuals, including the president, it’s impossible to say at this point. The answer to that question is going to turn on whether there is evidence to demonstrate that the president participated in a financial fraud.”

For his part, the former president has denied involvement in any wrongdoing. Many of those who support him have said the investigations by both offices are political in nature.

Many conservatives have pointed to the 2018 election campaign that James ran. In that campaign, she said if she were elected attorney general, she would directly take on Trump.

Some Republicans have even said that these investigations are a way for the powerful New York Democrats to try to stop Trump from running for president again in 2024.

Either way, it’s a little fishy that two extremely liberal people from New York seem so hell-bent on trying to take down the former president. Let’s see what evidence they actually have.
