(PatriotWise.com) — A Missouri woman was sentenced to life in prison last week after pleading guilty to endangering the welfare of a child, resulting in death, WKRC reported.
Angela West, 41, pleaded guilty to her role in the death of a 5-year-old who had been hogtied and gagged for allegedly “stealing food at night.”
West’s co-defendant, Shamira Buford, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, neglect or abuse of a child, involuntary manslaughter, and second-degree murder. Her trial is scheduled for June.
West and Buford were arrested in March after a student at Waynesville School informed the resource officer that he found his younger sister lying unconscious on the floor before he left for school that morning. The resource officer contacted the police, who quickly dispatched officers to the boy’s home.
When officers responded to the scene, another child answered the door and informed them that the young girl was dead.
Two women, later identified as Angela West and Shamira Buford, were both asleep in the home when police arrived. The child who let the officers in said the younger sister had been choked, and her body was in the living room, covered by a blanket.
Officers entered and found the girl’s body. The child had injuries around her ankles, neck, and wrists. Beside her was a blood-covered gray sock.
The student who initially reported the incident said West and Buford had been tying his sister up at night for several weeks because she was stealing food. The other sibling confirmed that the women would sometimes make the children help them tie the girl to a futon.
When questioned by investigators, Buford admitted that the girl would get tied up at night to stop her from stealing food. At first, the women used duct tape, but eventually they resorted to hogtying the girl using nylon rope. Buford admitted that the sock was used to gag the girl to stop her “whining and crying,” which kept the other children awake.
West told investigators that she thought the girl would be okay with a sock in her mouth since she could still “breathe through her nose.”
