(PatriotWise.com) — Donald Trump may face yet another legal issue as prosecutors consider charges in the classified document scandal that plagues the former President. Matthew Calamari, a former Trump staffer, was summoned to Washington, DC, recently to testify to a grand jury investigating the handling of classified documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Calamari faces questions on how video footage from inside Trump’s home was dealt with by staff after the Department of Justice had requested it. The footage forms part of the DOJ’s investigations into what happened to the classified documents when they were in Trump’s home. The footage reportedly shows two staff members moving boxes out of a storage closet.
The scandal began in August 2022 when the FBI raided Trump’s mansion in the Sunshine State. A federal judge signed the search warrant believing that evidence of a crime would be uncovered. Property taken from Mar-a-Lago included records labeled “Miscellaneous Top Secret Documents” and others marked with various categorizations.
In total, 184 documents were seized. Trump described the raid as politically motivated and a witch hunt. Fellow Republicans agreed and compared the federal handling of the Trump documents scandal with that of Joe Biden.
In November 2022, President Biden’s own lawyers said they discovered classified papers at his Delaware home. However, they did not publicize this until January 2023. Other documents were located in an office previously occupied by the President at the University of Pennsylvania.
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said the two cases were handled entirely differently, proving that the FBI and other federal agencies have been weaponized against conservatives and are actively protecting President Biden from scrutiny.
Rep. James Comer (R-KY), chair of the House Oversight Committee, said that while Biden was attacking Trump for his handling of government records, “He knew very well that he himself had possession of classified documents.” Comer added that there had been no FBI raid for Biden and no talk of criminal charges.
