(PatriotWise.com) — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted Chief Justice John Roberts for refusing to lend credence to the Senate Democrats’ latest attempt to delegitimize the US Supreme Court.
Schumer accused the chief justice of repeatedly failing to live up to his responsibilities as “guardian of the court’s fairness and opinion” on Tuesday after Roberts refused to play along with the media-generated scandal over Justice Samuel Alito flying a Revolutionary War-era flag outside of his home.
Despite its rich history, the media claimed that the “Appeal to Heaven” flag, designed by General George Washington, has become a “symbol” of Christian nationalism and a “battle flag” of the January 6 “insurrectionists.”
Senate Democrats, eager to undermine the Supreme Court ahead of its decisions on January 6-related cases and Trump’s claim of presidential immunity, seized on the media framing to once again attack the court’s legitimacy.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, along with Senator Schumer and other Democrat lawmakers, have demanded that Justice Alito recuse himself from any cases related to the 2020 election.
Schumer also criticized Roberts for failing to address “court shopping,” a practice used by both Republican and Democratic plaintiffs when suing the federal government.
Senator Durbin has been calling for the Senate to vote on legislation that would establish a code of ethics for the Supreme Court.
After the last media-fueled ethics scandal involving Justice Clarence Thomas last year, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) introduced the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act, which would force the co-equal and separate branches of the federal government to adopt a code of conduct.
Senator Durbin said last Thursday that Alito’s display of the George Washington flag demanded a response from lawmakers and called for Whitehouse’s bill to come to a vote this year.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in May blasted the Senate Democrats for creating a scandal where none existed to force the Supreme Court to acquiesce to their demands.
McConnell said lawmakers should “leave the Supreme Court alone” and suggested that Congress should do more to protect the justices from the mobs who went to their homes “and tried to do them harm.”
