  • The U.S. Army surpassed its target by enlisting 55,300 new soldiers, barely exceeding the 55,000 goal.
  • Changes in recruitment strategy, including the Future Soldier Preparatory Course, contributed to this success.
  • Critics question the lowered recruitment targets despite these improvements.
  • The Army also placed approximately 11,000 soldiers in the Delayed Entry Program for FY25.

Army’s Recruitment Surge

The U.S. Army has officially surpassed its recruitment target for fiscal year 2024, enlisting 55,300 new active-duty soldiers. This slight overreach past the 55,000 goal marks a significant achievement, especially after falling short by 25% in 2022 and by 15% in 2023.

The 2024 fiscal year saw the introduction of initiatives such as the Future Soldier Preparatory Course, which played a pivotal role in the Army’s recruitment efforts. Additionally, the recruitment branch underwent reorganization to include Talent Acquisition Technician warrant officers.

Changes to the Army’s recruiting enterprise, announced by Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth and General Randy George in October 2023, targeted an expanded labor market. This included creating a specialized talent acquisition workforce and modernizing the recruitment approach.

New Recruitment Strategies

The U.S. Army Recruiting Command celebrated the graduation of its first class of Talent Acquisition Technician warrant officers, consisting of 25 noncommissioned officers who will undergo further training. The updated curriculum for current recruiters and improved outreach tools aim to create a more efficient recruitment process.

“The U.S. Army’s recruiting force achieved our 55,000 accessions goal more than a month ahead of schedule, and we are on track to have more than 11,000 in our delayed entry program by the end of the month. This is more than double the goal we set for our delayed entry program and will allow our recruiting efforts for next year to start strong right out of the gate,” said Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth.

The Army deployed 62 medical providers and 46 medical technicians to 33 processing stations, streamlining the enlistment process and generating around 300 more enlistments per week. Meanwhile, the Future Soldier Preparatory Course has facilitated the enlistment of over 28,000 recruits by helping prospective soldiers overcome academic and physical fitness barriers.

Criticism and Challenges

Despite these successes, some lawmakers, including Sen. Tom Cotton, have criticized the improvements, pointing out that the recruitment targets were revised downwards. This criticism puts a spotlight on the Army’s strategies and whether they can sustain elevated recruitment numbers going forward.

“This year, we introduced new initiatives to attract qualified candidates and make the enlistment process more efficient, while our recruiters continued to connect with the communities they serve, share their Army stories and inspire others to serve as well,” said Maj. Gen. Johnny Davis, commanding general of USAREC.

The Army is continually modernizing recruitment efforts, now focusing more on online outreach and using digital tools to attract a larger and more diverse pool of candidates. This transition appears essential in an era where the younger generations primarily interact on social media platforms.
