Philadelphia Police Officer Dies After Gunshot Wound

Philadelphia police officer Jaime Roman died nearly three months after being shot during a routine vehicle stop in the Kensington neighborhood on June 22. Roman, 31, did not regain consciousness during his 80-day stay in intensive care. His prolonged battle ended on September 10, 2024.

Roman noticed an empty holster in the vehicle of driver Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez, 36. Vazquez ran away, firing three shots and hitting Roman. The suspect forced his way into a home before being arrested. Initially charged with attempted murder and other offenses, police officials plan to file murder charges following Roman’s death.

Rodriguez Vazquez had a lengthy criminal record, including previous charges for assault and gun offenses. His criminal history made the incident even more tragic for the Philadelphia community and its law enforcement.

Officer Roman Leaves Legacy of Bravery

Roman leaves behind a wife, a 7-year-old daughter, and a 4-year-old son. He joined the police department nearly seven years ago and initially served in the 12th district before transferring to the 25th district.

Described as a “very young, vibrant officer” who could “light up a room,” Roman always aspired to serve as a police officer, according to his father. Roman’s commitment to protecting his community stands as a testament to his character and dedication.

Community and Officials React to Tragic Loss

Fellow officers honored Roman outside Temple University Hospital as his body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Mayor Cherelle Parker ordered city flags to be flown at half-staff and expressed her determination to “not allow his death to be in vain.”

“Philadelphia, this is the first time this has happened during my tenure, the death of a police officer in the line of duty,” a tearful Parker said. “There’s no playbook on what a mayor is supposed to do at a time like this.”

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel echoed these sentiments, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Officer Jaime Roman, a dedicated and courageous member of our department. Jaime’s unwavering commitment to serving and protecting our community was an inspiration to us all. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled.”

Officer Roman’s partner returned fire during the encounter and assisted him immediately after. Roman was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he remained on life support until his passing. This incident not only underscores the perilous nature of police work but also highlights the heroism and sacrifices made by officers like Jaime Roman.
