Elon Musk to Face Inquiry in Brazil

(PatriotWise.com) — When a Brazilian supreme court judge ordered the removal of specific far-right profiles on the social media platform X, Elon Musk found himself at the center of a political maelstrom. He is now being accused of interfering with a legal process and is the subject of a probe in Brazil.

A court order was granted by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who was investigating former president Jair Bolsonaro’s attempts to remain in office after losing the 2022 election. The injunction compelled the site to prohibit particular users. Without complying, the social media platform would have been fined almost £16,000 per day for failure to comply and would not have been able to reveal whose accounts had been banned. In addition to urging Moraes to resign or face impeachment, Musk said that the firm would remove such limits.

Claiming to be part of his “Twitter Files” initiative, in which he and a team of journalists have been given access to Twitter’s internal data, the court order was leaked transparently.

American writer Michael Shellenberger asserts that a trove of conversations between Twitter’s legal staff and Brazilian judges demonstrate a substantial limitation on free expression, so these exchanges were made public. After the incident, Musk blasted the measure as “aggressive censorship” and pledged to eliminate the limitations. He said the Brazilian office would probably have to shutter its doors since the firm would lose all its income there.

The present administration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva backed Moraes’s investigation, his condemnation of Musk, and his calls for social media control. The senior members of Lula’s cabinet who spoke out against Musk’s initiatives did so with the conviction that Brazil would not accept an impunity culture and would never allow itself to be dominated by the extreme right.

When it comes to a campaign that opposed a law to regulate the internet, Moraes is at the forefront of an inquiry into Google and Telegram executives.
