The subpoena requests intelligence reports, documents, and communications associated with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s alleged connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This move follows whistleblower disclosures indicating a non-classified Microsoft Teams group chat among DHS employees, revealing information about Governor Walz.

The committee’s investigation delves into the CCP’s infiltration and influence campaign within the United States, including efforts targeting state governors. Chairman Comer initiated the probe in August after reports suggested that Walz may have links to CCP entities and officials. A comprehensive inquiry seeks to measure the CCP’s success in influencing American political figures and to explore necessary legislative reforms to safeguard national integrity.

The Whistleblower Disclosures

The whistleblower revealed an active Microsoft Teams group chat titled “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync” among DHS employees, which contains pertinent information about Governor Walz. The committee has learned that both classified and unclassified DHS documents capture additional details about Walz and his connections. The subpoena mandates the production of all records from this chat and related intelligence reports dating back to November 2023.

“The Committee has recently received whistleblower disclosures informing the Committee of serious concern among Department of Homeland personnel regarding a longstanding connection between the CCP and Minnesota Governor Timothy James Walz,” wrote Chairman James Comer.

The committee emphasizes that understanding the depth of these connections and the effectiveness of federal agencies in countering CCP political warfare is crucial. The findings will inform the need for urgent reforms to mitigate threats from foreign interference. Representative Nancy Mace and conservative commentators have publicly questioned Walz’s involvement with CCP officials, adding to the scrutiny.

Governor Walz’s Historical Ties

Governor Walz, who has reportedly traveled to China approximately 30 times, allegedly organized student trips to China in the 1990s funded by the Chinese government. His company, Educational Travel Adventures, Inc., coordinated these trips until 2003. In March 2024, Walz met with Consul General Zhao Jian to discuss China-U.S. relations. These interactions have sparked concerns about potential susceptibility to the CCP’s elite capture strategy.

“The Committee’s investigation of the CCP—begun long before Governor Walz was elevated to be the vice-presidential candidate for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris—seeks to understand the extent of the CCP’s infiltration and influence campaign and to identify legislative reforms to combat CCP political warfare targeting prominent Americans for elite capture. If a state governor and major political party’s nominee for Vice President of the United States has been a witting or unwitting participant in the CCP’s efforts to weaken our nation, this would strongly suggest that there are alarming weaknesses in the federal government’s effort to defend the United States from the CCP’s political warfare that must be urgently addressed. The information required of DHS by the Committee’s subpoena will inform the Committee’s understanding of how successful the CCP has been in waging political warfare in and against the United States, how effectively federal agencies are addressing the communist regime’s campaign, and what reforms are necessary to counter this threat,” concluded Chairman James Comer.

Media inquiries have highlighted Walz’s numerous visits to China and his prior criticisms of Chinese policies. Meanwhile, Walz’s representatives have accused Republicans of distorting facts. The investigation also faces challenges due to current limitations in the evidence supporting the allegations. As the committee proceeds with its inquiry, the spotlight remains on determining the extent of any foreign influence and ensuring transparency within political processes.
