The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a global scientific body that reviews thousands of studies, states that human activities have “unequivocally” caused this rise in temperature by adding greenhouse gases to the air. The Royal Society, one of the world’s oldest science academies, reports that burning coal, oil, and gas now adds roughly 10 billion tons of carbon to the atmosphere each year, more than enough to explain the jump in carbon dioxide levels and the warming seen since 1900. These conclusions are not fringe views; they reflect a strong, worldwide scientific agreement.

How fast today’s warming is compared with the past

NASA’s climate evidence site explains that Earth’s climate has always shifted, but the current warming stands out because it is happening at a rate not seen in many thousands of years. Using ice cores, ocean mud, tree rings, and other “natural archives,” scientists can estimate how quickly temperatures changed after past ice ages. That paleoclimate evidence shows that today’s warming is roughly 10 times faster than the average rate of warming after an ice age, and that carbon dioxide from human activity is rising about 250 times faster than it did from natural sources back then. In simple terms, we are hitting the planet’s thermostat far harder and faster than nature usually does.

Modern records back up this picture of unusual speed. A major study of global surface temperatures from 1973 to 2022 finds a steady warming trend of about 0.19 degrees Celsius per decade, with an increase in the rate after 1990. Other analyses show that since the early 1980s, the pace of warming has more than doubled compared with the previous 100 years. Recent media work using NASA data notes that the last three decades are the quickest warming period in records going back to 1880. Together, these lines of evidence point to a clear message: warming is not only strong, it is accelerating.

Evidence that recent warming is speeding up even more

New research is now sharpening that warning. One recent analysis finds that the pace of human-caused global warming has nearly doubled since 2015 compared with the long-term average, suggesting the planet warmed about 0.35 degrees Celsius in the decade up to 2025 versus under 0.2 degrees per decade before. Reports based on that work note that the Earth is warming at the fastest rate on record as emissions hit new highs and natural “carbon sinks,” such as forests and oceans, lose some of their ability to soak up pollution. NASA’s own climate pages observe that the rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled in the last 50 years. If this faster trend continues, the widely discussed 1.5-degree Celsius limit could be breached in the early 2030s.

Other datasets highlight the same underlying problem even when year-to-year numbers dip. NASA’s global indicator page shows that 2025 was slightly cooler than record-breaking 2024, yet still about 1.19 degrees Celsius above the mid-twentieth-century average. Berkeley Earth’s analysis finds that 2025 was the third warmest year since 1850, beaten only by 2024 and 2023, and sitting about 1.44 degrees Celsius above the 1850–1900 average. Short pauses or small drops do not cancel the larger climb; instead they sit on top of a long-term upward slope that keeps getting steeper.

Where there is debate and where there is not

Scientists do discuss details, such as exactly how much the rate has changed in the past decade or which dataset best shows that shift. One study argues that warming is happening at a statistically steady rate rather than “surging,” even as temperatures continue to rise. That kind of disagreement focuses on how to measure acceleration, not on whether warming is real or whether people are responsible. Major institutions, including NASA, NOAA, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and the Royal Society, agree that humans are the primary cause of the warming seen since about 1850. That broad consensus is key, even as specialists refine the charts.

For everyday Americans, especially those who worry that global “elites” are ignoring working families, the core issue is trust. Many conservatives see climate policy as a tool used to justify higher energy prices, new regulations, and global deals that hurt U.S. jobs. Many liberals see climate inaction as proof that powerful industries can block change even when science is clear. The data on rapid warming and human causes do not settle those political fights, but they do raise a shared concern: our leaders are arguing while the planet’s thermostat keeps turning up.
