Doug Burgum’s Signature Of A Nearly Complete Abortion Ban Was “An Issue” For Trump

(PatriotWise.com) — North Dakota’s Republican Governor Doug Burgum may have fallen out of favor as vice presidential running mate over his state’s 6-week abortion law, which former President Trump saw as at least slightly problematic.

During a recent interview with Fox News Radio, the Republican presidential candidate was asked whether North Dakota’s abortion law would impact Burgum’s chances in the veep-stakes.

Trump described North Dakota’s 6-week abortion law as “a pretty strong ban” and admitted that the law was somewhat of an issue for him.

Trump said while he thought Burgum was “great,” he thought North Dakota had “taken a very strong stance” on abortion, and that was “an issue.”

The legislation signed by Governor Burgum in April 2023 limited abortion to the first six weeks of pregnancy and included no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother.

North Dakota’s abortion law is considered the strictest in the country.

Trump’s comments about Burgum came just after the RNC removed its pro-life positions in the 2024 Republican platform, abandoning proposed federal limits on abortion and leaving the issue up to the states.

Additionally, the RNC’s revised platform does not include any specific opposition to late-term abortion.

Many pro-life Republicans blasted the RNC for abandoning the pro-life issue.

Trump’s former Vice President Mike Pence said in a July 9 statement that it was profoundly disappointing to the millions of pro-life voters who “have always looked to the Republican Party to stand for life.”

Trump also told Fox News Radio that he planned to announce his running mate during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

He explained that vice presidential picks used to be announced at the convention, which he said made the convention “more interesting.”

Of course, the former president put all speculation to rest about who would join his ticket on Monday, picking Ohio Senator J.D. Vance over Florida Senator Marco Rubio, both of whom were on the short list of potential picks.
