GOP Swiftly Approves a Reconfigured Platform for Convention

(PatriotWise.com) — Delegates to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee voted to adopt the RNC’s new platform on Monday.

According to Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, the co-chair of the platform committee, the 2024 platform, which was approved by the committee on July 8, had been “personally reviewed, edited, and approved” by Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Blackburn pushed back slightly on critics who blasted the platform committee for weakening the GOP’s long-held pro-life position, telling delegates that the platform protected “both the born and the unborn.”

Pro-life Republicans accused the RNC of abandoning decades of pro-life advocacy by the Republican Party by leaving the question of abortion up to the states. They also criticized the platform committee for removing any mention of opposition to late-term abortion.

Following the committee’s release of the 2024 platform, Faith and Freedom Coalition founder and chairman Ralph Reed initially expressed concern but ultimately fell in line to support the Republican platform.

Reed said in a July 8 statement that even with the changes, the Republican platform made it clear that the unborn have a right to life under the 14th Amendment’s due process clause.

Reed said the pro-life language that has appeared on the Republican platform for 40 years “applies to both the states and the federal government,” adding that this also applied to a late-term abortion ban.

Reed described the platform as “unapologetically pro-life” and said the Faith and Freedom Coalition was grateful to Trump and the RNC for continuing to stand for life.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins initially expressed concerns about the platform. However, on Monday, he said he was dropping his efforts to oppose it in light of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump last weekend.

The platform passed in a voice vote that also included a significant number of “no’s” in the convention room.

Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley and Co-Chair Lara Trump said this year’s platform focused mainly on border security and the economy.
